Bienvenue sur le ranking Smash Ultimate français pour l’année 2023 !

Malgré les nombreux défis et obstacles rencontrés lors de l’organisation de tournois, la scène compétitive de Super Smash Bros. Ultimate en France connaît une croissance notable : en 2023, la scène a recensé 3664 participantes et participants uniques par rapport à l’année précédente qui n’en comptait que 2787, et le nombre de tournois organisés est passé de 2295 à 3348.

La backroom du Discord Smash France Officiel s’est réunie cette année pour vous présenter un top 50 des joueuses et joueurs du pays sur la période du 1er janvier 2023 au 31 janvier 2024. La France étant un des pays les plus actifs à l’échelle européenne et mondiale, le gratin de la scène internationale est venu du monde entier afin de participer à nos tournois ; le classement mettra donc en avant les smashers qui se sont démarqués en nous rendant visite.

Notre processus de création

Suite à l’initiative de Lopraz avec son L-O PR, qui était un classement top 100 français (avec mentions honorables) sur algorithme customisé, nous avons décidé de travailler avec ce dernier afin de proposer un classement Smash Ultimate français aussi proche de la réalité des tournois que possible.

L’idée étant de permettre au plus de régions possibles d'être représentées, nos efforts partagés nous ont permis d’établir différents critères pour que l’algorithme nous propose un classement à l’image de la scène Smash Ultimate en France en 2023, tout en minimisant les éventuelles modifications nécessaires une fois que l’algorithme fournirait sa liste.

Joueurs étrangers

Afin de refléter le dynamisme et l’attractivité de la France auprès des scènes étrangères, nous avons voulu représenter les joueurs venus de communautés internationales dans ce classement, bien qu'ils n’occupent pas une place officielle au même titre que leurs homologues français. Par exemple, un joueur étranger qui aurait participé à au moins 6 tournois en France et qui, par ses performances impressionnantes, se placerait deuxième du classement se verrait alors attribuer le rang 1.5 pour exprimer sa place entre les premier et deuxième rangs.

Tiering des événements et facteurs disqualifiants

Chaque événement appartient à une échelle de tiers en fonction du nombre de participants, suivant la répartition ci-dessous : 

De 24 à 64 participants : tournoi local

De 65 à 192 : tournoi régional

De 193 à 384 : tournoi national

385 et plus : tournoi majeur

Il a été décidé par notre staff de compter tous les événements comptant plus de 24 participants, et avec moins de 10% d’inscrits disqualifiés pour absence (DQ). N’ont été pris en considération que les tournois disputés en format 1 contre 1 classique : des tournois orientés plus “funs” comme des événements Squad Strike, 2v2 ou autres formats ne sont donc pas comptabilisés.

Concernant le cas de Steve, il a été décidé de prendre en compte les tournois qui n’autorisent pas Steve, afin de permettre aux organisatrices et organisateurs d’appliquer le règlement qui convient à leur scène locale, avec toutefois un coefficient inférieur à un tournoi classique. Ainsi, le Crocolisée qui comptabilise 128 inscrits est passé du tier “régional” au tier “local”.

Les prochaines éditions du ranking

À l’avenir, les éditions de ce ranking officiel français reprendront un système similaire à celui présenté ci-dessus, et seront publiées tous les 6 mois : la saison prochaine couvrira donc la période du 1er février au 31 juillet 2024.

Welcome to the french Smash Ultimate ranking for the 2023 season !

Despite many challenges and obstacles faced when organising tournaments throughout the year, the french Super Smash Bros. Ultimate competitive scene has experienced a great growth compared to the previous year : a total of 3664 unique players went to tournaments in 2023, compared to only 2787 in 2022. The total number of tournaments organised has gone up as well, going from 2295 in 2022 to 3348 in 2023.

A backroom composed of tournament organisers from the “Smash France Officiel” Discord gathered to present a top 50 of the french players that left a mark on the scene in the period dating from January 1st, 2023 to January 31st, 2024. Given that our scene is one of the most active in Europe and even in the world, many foreign players came to test their strength against France’s greatest from around the world, and our ranking aims to highlight these players as well.

Our creative process

Following the initiative issued by Lopraz last year with his L-O PR, a french top 100 (+ honourable mentions) built from a custom algorithm, we decided to work with him to establish an official french Smash Ultimate ranking which would best represent the state of the scene in 2023.

Our staff combined efforts to put together a few criterias so the algorithm would represent the scene in the best way possible without having to make modifications to the list afterwards, and we really wanted to allow for all French regions to be represented in the ranking.

Foreign players

To best represent the fact that France was a very dynamic and attractive scene to players from outside the country, we wanted to highlight these challengers although they don’t hold an official place in the ranking to the same degree of french players. For example, a foreign player which would have participated in at least 6 tournaments in France in 2023 and if they had impressive enough results to get ranked second, they would be ranked 1.5 to reflect that they would be ranked between first and second place.

Event tiering and disqualifying factors

Every event counted belongs to a scale of tiers depending of the number of players the tournament had, as follows :

24 to 64 players : local tournament

65 to 192 players : regional tournament

193 to 384 players : national tournament

385 players and more : major tournament

We decided to count all events with 24 players and more, with less than 10% of DQ’d players (disqualified for not showing up). Only serious 1v1 tournaments were taken in consideration, which means side-events or “for fun” tournaments like Squad Strike, 2v2 and other formats were not counted.

Regarding the case of Steve banned events, it was decided they would be counted so that organisers would be free to apply whichever ruleset they pleased to their local scene. However, tournaments where Steve is banned will not be valued as high as they would if they allowed Steve. A tournament affected by this rule for reference is Crocolisée, which had 128 registered players, and was downgraded from the “regional” tier to the “local” tier.

Future issues of this ranking

In the future, this official french ranking will be reenacted in a similar manner to this one, and will be published every 6 months : the next season will be covering the period from February 1st to July 31st, 2024.
